Ingredients
-
3 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for kneading)
-
1 tablespoon sugar
-
1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
-
1 1/4 cups warm water (110°F or 43°C)
-
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
-
2 tablespoons olive oil (or melted butter)
-
Cornmeal for dusting (optional)
Instructions
-
In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and stir gently. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
-
In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a sticky dough forms.
-
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, adding more flour as needed, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
-
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
-
Punch down the dough, then shape it into a loaf or baguette. Place it on a baking sheet dusted with cornmeal (if using).
-
Cover with a towel and let it rise again for 30-45 minutes.
-
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
-
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
-
Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
Notes
-
For a glossy finish, brush the dough with an egg wash before baking.
-
To make this bread whole wheat, substitute half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour.
-
You can freeze this bread for up to 3 months. Simply wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and foil, then reheat in the oven when ready to enjoy.
